Future Habitat homeowners participate in financial education classes, often before the building process even begins. Homeowners must also be able and willing to pay an affordable mortgage. Habitat makes a reasonable effort to ensure that an affordable mortgage does not exceed 30% of the homeowner’s gross monthly income. Mortgage payments are cycled back into the community to help build additional Habitat houses.

Habitat for Humanity Texas provides education, technical assistance, and resources to empower Texas affiliates while they are on the ground making a difference in their local communities. The 2021 Habitat House Design Contest sponsored by Simpson Strong-Tie invited local affiliates to submit their home designs across a range of categories, including equity, multifamily, sustainability and many more. Neil and Erica — one of 21 families to build their homes alongside volunteers at the 36th Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project — share how three years of homeownership changed their family. “My kids are going to have a home that’s their home for as long as we want,” Erica says. Habitat’s vision is of a world where everyone has a decent place to live. Habitat works toward this vision by building and improving homes in partnership with individuals and families in need of a decent and affordable place to live. Through our Disaster Home Repair Program, Houston Habitat helps preserve affordable homeownership by repairing disaster-damaged homes for low-income homeowners. Repairs include everything needed to make homes safe, sanitary and secure, including mold testing and remediation. Funding from generous donors helps Houston Habitat defray costs. Our program helps preserve Houston’s dwindling affordable housing stock and allows homeowners to remain in their homes and rebuild their lives.
Habitat for Humanity ReStoresare proudly owned and operated by local Habitat for Humanity affiliates. Proceeds are used to build homes and improve communities locally and around the world. Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit housing organization working in local communities across all 50 states and in more than 70 countries around the world.
How does financial education help families?
In this evidence brief, Habitat takes a look at who currently has access to homeownership and what factors play a role in the U.S. Core Volunteers make Houston Habitat’s mission possible. Each Core Volunteer develops construction and leadership skills that are essential to homebuilding. Ongoing support is important to enabling projects to continue their work, so we encourage donors to continue to contribute to projects over time.
Agape will oversee the new construction of 80 single-family homes, including 57 affordable homes and 23 market-rate homes. Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity Texas has partnered with affiliates and families to build and improve places they call home since 2005. Houston Habitat has found that it is more than just possible to build sustainably – it’s affordable. By carefully choosing materials and building methods, Houston Habitat builds homes which are environmentally friendly, safe, healthy and energy-efficient and which have low costs-to-own/maintain for our homeowners. From building resilient, hurricane-proof homes in Florida to prototyping with a 3D-printed home in Virginia, Habitat affiliates in the U.S. seek innovative solutions to local, pressing needs.

Families and individuals in need of decent, affordable housing apply for homeownership with their local Habitat for Humanity. ReStore receives different types of inventory daily and as a result, our inventory is constantly changing. Potential homeowners partner with Houston Habitat by investing up to 250 hours of sweat equity which includes completing financial and home maintenance training and building their homes alongside volunteers. They then purchase their homes with an affordable mortgage. Once selected, Habitat homeowners must partner with us throughout the process.
